Serving Others
the hands and feet of Christ.
In 1 John, the apostle counsels Christians to love, beyond words or doctrine, but in their actions, and the works of their hands. Community services at MSDA reach out to a number of local organizations, as we seek to be the hands and feet of Christ in Manhattan.
Community outreach in NYC is complex, because there are two very different needs that the church can help meet. First, we are called to address the physical needs of the community: clothe the naked, feed the hungry, comfort the hurting. A separate service exists for those who are physically blessed—with health, homes, and provisions for their needs—but seek emotional and spiritual solace.
Through ministries with homeless shelters and kitchens, we seek to provide food, clothing, Christmas baskets, and various other forms of aid. We also have a shower van ministry that goes out once a month, and participate in drives to collect professional clothing to rehabilitate homeless people, and equip them for success in the workplace.
Additionally, since the MSDA church hosts various support groups throughout the week, we have ministries to reach out to those who pass through our building. Though these individuals might not be coming to our church for spiritual reasons, we strive to show them the love of Christ through hospitality. and compassion. Each year, we host a Thanksgiving dinner for the members of these groups, in addition to quarterly dinners.
1 John 3:17-18
If anyone has material possessions and sees a brother or sister in need but has no pity on them, how can the love of God be in that person? Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth.
